Podium place for Eva at Bedford

Sussex Schools took one of its smallest teams in recent years to Bedford for the finals of the English Schools Combined Events and Race Walking Championships.

The best Sussex performance of the weekend was by race walker Eva Payton-White who won the battle for the bronze medal in the senior girls 5000m, in a personal best of 30:22.81. Unfortunately, in the senior boys race, Oli Hopkins (Sussex Downs), while chasing Hampshire’s Chris Snook, pushed a little too much and was disqualified.

Macready, Collins and Ellard will be League champions

Chichester’s Ben Collins and Worthing’s Emma Macready and Luke Ellard made certain of becoming Sussex League champions in the New Year by notching up their third victories in the Sussex Cross-country league event Lancing Manor on Saturday.

Gale force winds again affected the athletes and the officials but luckily they were not so severe or cold, and were South West rather north West, as the winds that battered the second fixture at Bexhill a couple of weeks back.

UK vest for Grace Baker - - Sussex League

Following her fine run in Liverpool last weekend, when she finished fifth in the junior race, Grace Baker from Hastings, has been selected to run for the Great Britain Junior team in the European Cross-country championships.

This year the championships are being held at Hyeres on the French Riviera on the 13th of this month.

This weekend sees the third of this season’s Sussex Cross-country League events at Lancing Manor starting with Under 13 girls race at 12.30 though it will be preceded by a race for U11s at 12.00.
