Another busy weekend for the Under 15s

The accent shines on the youngsters again this weekend and it has been a particularly tough few weeks for the Under 15s who two weeks back contested the South of England championships. Last weekend they were involved in the Inter-county match and this weekend they will be off to Bedford for the England U15 and U17 championships.

At the recent South of England championships, also for these twin age groups Sussex, won six gold medals so we can look for more glitter, but not all gold, this weekend.

Grice through to semi-final

On a great day for British athletes in the World Championships at Beijing when most British athletes survived their opening or qualifying rounds Charlie Grice (Phoenix) survived his heat of the 1500m despite nearly taking a tumble.

In a slow run race when there was frequently bunching Grice managed to fight his way through to fourth place in 3:43.21s.

Victories for Livvy Connor (2) and George Turner at Inter-Counties - - - Melanie Anning.

A busy season and the move to a late August date impacted heavily on the Sussex Under 20 team for the annual inter-counties match at Hendon on Sunday, where unfortunately in many events there was no Sussex representation at all. Wind and rain also made it hard going for the athletes who had to contend with qualifying heats for all events up to and including 800m.

Lewes and Withdean Tracks to close

Athletes in the Brighton and Hove and Lewes areas will be able to put their feet up throughout September as both the Withdean and Lewes athletic tracks will be closed for re-surfacing and re-marking.

Lewes is actually first out of the blocks, they are getting a full resurfacing and they will be closed from Monday 24th August for eight weeks.

U15/20 Inter Counties - - - World Championships

The South of England Inter-county match for Under 15s and Under 20s dominates this weekend’s activities.

As is always the case with this match holidays have made team selection for the Team managers but this applies to all teams though the problem is better absorbed by the likes of Surrey, Hampshire, Kent and Essex who have a much larger pool of athletes available.

The event will be held at Hendon on Sunday.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Downbeat finish to Southern League

There was a disappointing end to the Southern Athletic League at the weekend as far as Sussex clubs were concerned although there were many excellent individual performances.

No titles no promotions and three relegations made this a rather sobering end to the League season.

A Golden weekend for Sussex youngsters - - - UPDATE

A great weekend for Sussex at Ashford at the weekend saw Sussex youngsters win six gold medals at the South of England Under 15/17 championships.

As always the August holidays seriously depleted entries, several leading Sussex performers missed the championships and this really is not a suitable weekend to hold these championships.

Hards takes Sussex title - - - Update

Daryl Hards from Worthing took the Sussex 10,000m title at Withdean on Thursday and also finished second in the South of England championships that was held in conjunction.

For most of the race Hards was content to battle with Chichester’s James Baker for the Sussex crown but in the closing stages he broke clear to chase the leaders.

Richards - World Championships

Steyning ‘s Olympic race walker Ian Richards is the World Masters Champion after overcoming the sweltering heat of Lyons to dominate the 5K track walk at the Championship event. Seeded second in the M65 age group, Richards beat his Mexican rival Jose Lopez Camarena by some 14 seconds to take the title in 25:03.76. Three days later Richards conceded his 10K World title, finishing fourth in a season's best of 54:67.00.

Several Sussex athletes made the journey to France and full results can be found on the Power of 10.

A busy weekend

There is something for everyone, well almost, this weekend.

On the championships scene the U15 and U17s head to Ashford for the South of England championships which are being held on both Saturday and Sunday and there are high hopes of numerous Sussex medals to be harvested.
On Saturday the last round of the Southern Athletics League will be held at various venues across the South of England.
