Honours well shared at Christ's Hospital

Brighton & Hove Fly Sussex Flag in Southern Championships

Brighton & Hove City qualified for a place in the National Twelve Stage Road Relay in May when they were the only Sussex team to line up for the Southern Championship at Milton Keynes on Sunday.

This race is split between alternate long and short legs and team managed Howard Bristow got the team off to a fine start when finishing 12th on the opening leg in 24:55 a pretty good effort as all teams always put one of their strongest athletes on this opening stage.

Baker in action in China | Victory for Smith in Tonbridge

In tough conditions at Guyang in China Grace Baker from Hastings was the fourth British runner to finish in the World Cross-country championships.

The course was fairly flat with some artificial hillocks provided to add interest but probably of more significance was that the race was altitude which no doubt had some effect on the Hasting girl who is sometimes prone to breathing problems. In a field of one hundred runners the Sussex girl finished in 82nd place.

Tough competition for Sussex Youngsters at Tonbridge.

Baker in China, Sussex Schools athletes in Kent.

The Cross-country season comes to an end for this weekend when the Sussex School’s Year 7 & 8 teams travel to Tunbridge Wells for the South East Schools Inter-county match on Saturday while a few miles away in China Hastings athlete Grace Baker will be donning the Great Britain vest when she competes in the Junior (U20) race at the Worlds Cross-country Championships.

Victory for Tobin at Eastleigh

Helena Tobin (Brighton & Hove) smashed her personal best in the Eastleigh 10km Road Race on Sunday when she was an impressive winner of the event.

Clocking 34:34 Tobin slashed a full minute off her previous best as she finished more than fifty metres clear of Kent A.C’s Amy Clement who recorded 34:34.

There were also personal bests for the first three Sussex runners to finish in the men’s event with Howard Bristow having one of his best ever runs to finish fourth in 30:56 while club mate Max Dumbrell finished 12th in 31:45 and Daryl Hards (Worthing) 13th in 31:53.

A good spread of titles at Christ's Hospital.

More than five hundred runners contested the Sussex School’s Year 7 and Year 8 Cross-country championships at Christ’s Hospital on Thursday in firm and dry conditions.

Racing was good in all four races though it was only in the opening race, the Girl’s Year 7 race that there was actually bust up at the finish.
