Crisp, sunny conditions greeted runners in the third instalment of this season’s Brooks Sussex League XC at Lancing Manor. International Mountain Runner Chris Smith dominated the men’s race, repeating his victory from last year. Smith, representing his new Second Claim club, Haywards Heath Harriers, got in front and was clear of the pack after a few hundred metres. The lead continued to grow and the peloton soon knew they were in a battle for Silver.
Heading into the final race of the 2014 Harvey Curtis Sussex Road Race Challenge (SRRC), the Brighton 10k, the outcome of the men’s contest was almost too close to call — with Neil Boniface (Horsham Joggers) leading by just one point ahead of Kevin Rojas (Brighton & Hove City AC). The week before, as a dress rehearsal, the pair had gone head-to-head over 5k around Hove Park — and it was Boniface who showed slightly keener form, with a swift 15:15, four seconds ahead Rojas.
Twin Brothers, James and Matthew McCarthy from Crowborough Runners, took part in the National Modern Biathlon Championships in Birmingham last weekend with James finishing 6th overall with 2343 points and Matthew 10th with 2273 points for the combined 200m swim and 1600m run.
Following his fine run in the European Trials Cross-country race at Liverpool on Saturday Brighton & Hove’s Will Gray has bee selected to represent Great Britain in the European Championships in Bulgaria later this month.
Twenty one year old Gray, who is currently at Birmingham University, was runner up in the Sussex Senior cross-country championship back in January and was the fastest senior steeplechaser in Sussex, had finished sixth in last weekend’s races has been nominated in the U23 team.

There were further honours on Friday for SSAA President Reg Hook at the Sussex Sports Awards. Reg was declared winner of the BBC Sussex Unsung Hero Award at the glittering and star studded presentation dinner at the Grand Hotel, Brighton.

Congratulations to our President, Reg Hook, who has been named as Volunteer of the Year at the Brighton & Hove City Sports Awards. Reg was awarded the accolade for his outstanding dedication and support of local athletics for more than 50 years. He dedicates much of his time behind the scenes to ensure others can enjoy a sport they love. Reg has been a committee member of the Sussex Schools Athletics Association for more than 50 years and President for 25 years.
