Sussex AA is introducing an inter counties representative match at the Brighton 10k on Sunday, November 18.
The Sussex AA team will be selected and will compete against teams from at least 8 other southern counties.
Organiser and team selector, Tom Ulliot, said: “We want our Sussex team to be as strong as possible to compete against the other counties. “The plan is each county will field up to eight pre-nominated athletes, four of whom must be females and four males. There will be awards for the first three female teams and the first three male teams based on cumulative times for the first three runners over the line. Importantly there will also be a mixed team award where the cumulative time of the three scoring ladies and three scoring men is totalled to establish 1st, 2nd and 3rd, this mixed team award in fact being the main award for the match. “As well as this, there will also be individual awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both genders.”
He added: “For all of the team awards, although results will be based on the first three scoring runners, medals will be presented to all four (and 8 for the mixed) runners taking part for that county as the 4th, non-scoring runner is nonetheless an integral part of the team.”
The mixed team award is a break with tradition but fits with the Sussex AA ethos to promote the sport across genders and foster a real team spirit on the day for each of the county teams. Trophies will also be awarded to the first county in each of the three team races - 1st female team, 1st male team and 1st mixed team. Any athlete selected to run for their county who has already entered and paid as an individual prior to being selected can have their individual entry deferred at no additional cost until the following year. Runners will be expected to compete in a county vest.
At this point in time the other counties we are up against are Bedfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Hampshire, Kent, Buckinghamshire and of course ourselves here in Sussex agreeing to take part with a maybe from Surrey, Norfolk and Hertfordshire but this will be firmed up soon.
On the day facilities of Concord 2 will be shared with Vegan Runners, located on Madeira Drive. The teams will be able to congregate here as well as leave kit, use toilet facilities etc pre-race, as well as post-race for the presentation of the inter counties match awards.
