Three Sussex athletes for Glasgow

Sussex have three athletes in the Great Britain team for the European Indoor Championships at Glasgow next month.

Brighton Phoenix’s Charlie De’Vall Grice, who placed ninth in the 1500 metres at the Muller Invitation Games on Saturday, will race in the 3,000m while club mate Robbie Fitzgerald will be making his debut in a major Games will line up in the 1500m.

Brighton & Hove’s Amber Anning, who is still in the U20 age group will race in the 400 metres and has also been included in the 4 x 400 metre relay squad.

The weekend

Competition this weekend is mainly split between Popham Airfield, near Basingstoke in Hampshire, Goodwood and Reykjavik in Iceland so it will be cold where ever you are.

The South East Schools Inter-counties Cross country match will be held at Popham and Sussex will be fielding teams in each of the six races and many of the runners will be striving to catch the selector’s eyes for the teams for the English Schools championships at Leeds in March.

Fastest for nearly 50 years

Amber Anning ran the fastest ever 400 metres by a Sussex woman when winning her seeded race indoors in Vienna on Saturday.

Her time of 53.35s was well over a second faster than the second girl and was the fastest by any British U20 woman this century. In fact not since Marilyn Neufville clocked 53.01s indoors in 1979 has anyone run faster.

All the races were seeded at this large Viennese meeting and the Sussex runner was actually seeded 14th but in her race she outstripped the opposition from the outside lane and lifted her seeding to sixth.
