Amber and Ben Strike Gold

There was more glory and medals for Sussex youngsters at the English U15/17 Track and Field championships at Bedford over the weekend including two titles plus three Sussex records.

Again pride of place must go to U17 Worthing thrower Ben Hawkes who retained his unbeaten Hammer record this season with another crushing victory with 71.91m but he also added a silver medal in the discus throw with a personal effort of 52.70m, which is also a new Sussex record. More Under 15 Records - Euro U23 Champs

The Sussex Under 15 athletes are determined to rewrite the Sussex U15 League records this season and the had another bite last Wednesday.

In June six tumbled in both the East and West match and at Wednesday’s East Division match at Lewes another three fell by the wayside.

In almost perfect conditions newly crowned English Schools Junior javelin champion Lizzie Korczak broke the League record again having broken it in June and then lost it a couple of days later to Horsham’s Peanut Meekings.

Junior Javelin Record

Despite the loss of three potential medallists at Birmingham over the weekend it was another good year for Sussex Schools in fact they seem to be going through a fairly rich patch.

For the fourth successive year they have won ten medals at these championships, this year it was six golds, which was one more than last year, but overall 2016 just had the edge.

There was also an unusual bonus this year as junior girl javelin thrower Lizzie Korczak set a new Sussex record.
