Fast time in Brighton 10k

It was a good day for Sussex athletes in the annual Brighton 10k road race which was held on Sunday after missing last year’s event because of severe weather conditions.

This year the conditions were good and Jonathan Hopkins from Swansea stormed away from a field that by and large lacked the quality that the race usually attracts.

He finished more than one minute ahead of his nearest rival, Crawley’s James Westlake, in a fast time of 29:40s.

Bright10 win for Evans - The Weekend.

Lewes Athletic Club’s Tom Evans, along with several other leading Sussex runners, gave the Sussex Cross-country League event at Goodwood a miss last weekend to concentrate on the “Bright10” road race at Brighton on Sunday and he did it to good effect.

Evans, who is primarily a triathlete and James Westlake (Crawley) who is a footballer fought through the early stages of the race but Evans moved clear for a handsome victory in 51:46 to the Crawley runner’s 52:33 with David Wilson (Thames Hare and Hounds) in third place in 52:30.

Spannagl and Evans fastest at Goodwood

Johanna Spannagl made a most successful return to competitive athletics at the Sussex Cross-country Relays championships last Saturday.

A decade ago the Horsham Blue Star Harrier was one of the most promising middle distance runners on the Sussex scene and she still holds the Under 15 course record at Goodwood but studies prevented her fulfilling her promise. Now back in action she can prove a real power on the Sussex athletic scene at least.
