Sussex Masters nominated for World Awards

Sussex Masters, race walker Ian Richards (Steyning) and Combined eventer Brian Slaughter (Eastbourne) have been nominated by the British Masters Athletic Federation for the World Masters Athletics Annual Awards.

This is a result of their multi British Titles and Records this year along with European and World Championship Medals both indoor and out.

The awards are due to be announced before the end of the year.

Sussex best for Phoenix at West London

Brighton Phoenix set a Sussex best at the South of England cross-country relay championships at Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday with a fine fifth place.

Sussex participation in this event has never been very strong and for many years no Sussex club has travelled to the event.

Phoenix, who missed the County event the previous weekend, made an excellent showing at the West London course.

Another Gold Medal for Richards

On a very good day for racing Ian Richards of Steyning, after his 3 Golds in Malaga, easily retained his Sussex Men’s 10,000m race walking title at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, in 55:18.8s. Although in a slower time than last year, after receiving a couple of warnings early on in the race, he finished well clear of fellow 70 year old Paul Gaston (Surrey Walking Club) who clocked 67:59.1s.
