The final positions in this year’s Southern Athletics League have now been published and Brighton & Hove are the only Sussex Club to gain promotion this season.

Eastbourne Rovers, who had gone into the final match two points clear were thwarted. In a tough match they were squeezed into third place and thus allowed Harrow and Medway & Maidstone to draw level and three teams were at the head of Division 2 SE each scoring 17 League points.

On match points however Eastbourne came third with 1049 to Harrow’s 1073.5 and Medway’s 1069.5 points and despite a brilliant season the Sussex team miss promotion by 21 match points.

Crawley’s fine victory in their final match in Division 1 lifted them five places in the league to finish sixth.

In Division 3 SW Brighton & Hove’s, win in the final match, confirmed their second place in the league, one point behind City of Salisbury. This sees them promoted to Division 2, probably SW which means that they will not clash head to head with Eastbourne who remain in Division 2 SE.

Also Division 3 SW Horsham Blue Star finished eighth in the League with 13 points while Worthing placed 12th with 8 points and Chichester 14th, also with 8 points.

The other Sussex teams, who compete in Division 3 SE, Hastings finished fifth with 15 points, East Grinstead were ninth with 12 points and the combined Haywards Heath/Lewes team 11th with 9 points.
